“Companies are increasingly focusing on the development of orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) and other novel methods of oral drug delivery. There is also a growing trend towards the formulation of sachets.” – Research and Markets, Global Pharmaceutical Excipients Market 2016-2021 – Type, Functionality, Formulation Analysis of the $8.1 Billion Industry. 2016
“Disruptive” is the current business jargon for a product or service that changes a market. Most organizations want to “disrupt” their industries, with the hope it will affect the market permanently. In healthcare, an example is the increasing use of sachets in drug delivery. Sachets are now being used to treat all types of diseases, from the common cold to solid tumor cancers.
Sachets can deliver drugs that treat the common cold and reduce the likelihood of the flu. A 2003 study found a fixed combination sachet of acetylsalicylic acid and pseudoephedrine safe and well tolerated in the treatment of the common cold. According to a 2010 study, Pihui Fanggan Sachet (PHFGS), a sachet traditionally used in China, affected the immune system and reduced lowered the incidence rate of the flu.
Sachets can serve as a drug delivery method in the treatment of ulcerative colitis and inflammatory bowel disease. A 2013 study found that patients who took daily mesalazine granules in the form of a sachet to maintain remission of ulcerative colitis had higher levels of medication compliance than those who took multiple daily doses in tablet form. A 2000 study showed that the sachet form of mesalazine in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease had the same effect as the tablet form of the drug but required fewer doses and was easier to swallow.
Sachets can deliver drugs that treat solid tumor cancers. For example, a 2015 study explored the use of an oral dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor in sachet form in the treatment of advanced colorectal, pancreatic and melanoma tumors. About one-third of the patients showed stable disease control, and the toxicities were consistent with those of other dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitors.
