Likarda is the leading regenerative medicine company for companion animals. We have discovered a better way to manage diabetes in dogs and cats.” – Likarda. Accessed Nov. 4 2018.

Kansas City is home to both the Kansas City Technology Galaxy and the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor. One organization that shines in both is Likarda. This successful biotech company specializes in health care for companion animals.

Likarda is best known for its KansletTM, an improved islet cell that veterinarians can transplant into diabetic dogs. However, animal health is not Likarda’s only focus. In a 2018 press release, cofounder Karthik Ramachandran said, “We focus on bringing to market disruptive technologies that improve healthcare outcomes and lower costs for pets and people alike. To illustrate, our proprietary three-dimensional cell culture system serves as a predictive model to demonstrate how test drug compounds work in the human body.”

Lisa Stehno-Bittel and Karthik Ramachandran, who met as professor and student at the KU Medical Center, founded Likarda in 2012 because Ramachandran invented a device that develops 3-D cell clusters. With many applications for the technology, the business quickly grew. “At one time, Likarda was relying on ‘homemade’ versions of Ramachandran’s plates produced at KU Med. Now, a multinational manufacturer is producing plates not only for Likarda’s in-house research but also for Likarda to sell to customers,” a Thinking Bigger Business Media article says.

Likarda is a successful organization in the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor, as well as the Kansas City Technology Galaxy. Orbis Biosciences&reg looks forward to one day shining as brightly as Likarda.
