“MRIGlobal’s story is one of humble origins, but marked by steady expansion as the organization addressed challenges of everincreasing scope and scale and complexity.” – MRIGlobal history brochure. Accessed Aug. 26, 2018.
MRIGlobal is a member of the Kansas City technology galaxy. The organization, which is headquartered in Kansas City, has had a long and successful history. This has contributed to the success of Kansas City and the rise of the biotech industry in Kansas City.
MRIGlobal was founded in 1944 as the Midwest Research Institute. “Back then, a small group of influential business leaders, including J.C. Nichols, saw a need to keep the area’s scientific population working in the city after World War II-related work ended,” states a 2014 article in the Kansas City Star. Those leaders filled that need through the creation of the Midwest Research Institute as an applied-research institute, which performed independent studies and research on a contract basis.
Throughout the next three decades, the organization expanded and took on more projects and responsibilities. In 1977, it began managing what was then known as the government’s new Solar Energy Research Institute, now known as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The lab is based in Golden, Colorado, and MRIGlobal still manages it.
In 2011, the organization changed its name to MRIGlobal. A press release at the time said, “In recognition of its growth from a regional institute founded 67 years ago to an internationally recognized research and development organization with offices and projects throughout the U.S. and overseas, Kansas City-based Midwest Research Institute has changed its name to MRIGlobal.”
MRIGlobal’s successful history has contributed to Kansas City’s success. Orbis Biosciences® is proud to be headquartered in Kansas City, just as MRIGlobal is. Orbis Biosciences looks forward to contributing to the city’s success, too.
